The Last of Us Part II revolves around Ellie’s journey, but Naughty Dog also explores its complex themes by asking players to consider events from different perspectives. This adds surprising ambiguity and nuance to a fantastic cast of characters who are brought to life through stellar performances. With bold narrative ambition, intense gameplay, and meticulous technical execution, The Last of Us Part II doesn’t only distinguish itself as Game Informer's Game of the Year for 2020; it’s one of the defining experiences of the outgoing console generation.

You don’t have to like The Last of Us Part II. You may well hate it, and that doesn’t make you wrong. But in a year so defined by division and alienation, by the struggle to find glimmers of hope in darkness, Naughty Dog delivered the only major game that dared to try to speak to all of that—the good and the bad.

It truly is a stunning game, and Naughty Dog has left no stone unturned in its quest for perfect visual fidelity. No matter how long I preach about The Last of Us Part II, I’ll never be able to do it justice. This game demands your attention. You simply have to play it, engage with its narrative, soak up all that immersive detail, panic when enemies start hunting you down like a wild animal. Feel what Ellie feels. Feel what Abby feels.
